Hey Kings, it’s summertime. Now that we’re in the midst of summer and spending long days in the scorching heat, it’s important to remember to protect your skin. Whether you wear a hat or sit under the shade when you’re outside, playing with your kids, or watching sports, sunscreen is still important and it’s good to find one that suits your lifestyle.
Even if you’re a man who likes to keep his skincare routine simple, sunscreen is essential for healthy skin. That’s why we want to inform the men of The Kingdom about wearing sunscreen to not only protect your skin, but your life. Today, we’ll discuss the benefits of wearing sunscreen, how to choose the best sunscreen for you, and other sun protection tips so that you can have a safe summer. Here are a few reasons why:
Sunburn Prevention:
It’s a common misconception that sunscreen is only needed when spending your days by the pool or the beach. It’s important to protect your skin with a quality sunscreen daily, even on a cloudy day. UV rays can penetrate through clouds and cause a sunburn when you least expect it. A severe sunburn will leave your skin red and painful to the touch; it could also lead to blisters and peeling. Severe sunburns like that cause skin damage that could potentially lead to melanoma later on down the line.
Skin Cancer Prevention:
It’s a very sad reality that skin cancer affects millions of people every year and is the most common cancer in the United States. That’s why we think it’s important to educate men about how to prevent skin cancer and keep themselves healthy. In addition to wearing sunscreen, seeing a dermatologist once a year can help catch skin cancer early on and save your life. It’s always better to be safe than sorry – your life is too precious and valuable.
Premature Aging:
To prevent premature fine lines and wrinkles, wearing sunscreen daily is key. The sun can cause damage to the skin’s collagen and elastin; this is what keeps the skin from sagging. Sunspots are another form of damage caused by the sun that can be avoided with the use of sunscreen. When we look good, we feel good. Taking care of your skin on the outside allows you to feel good on the inside, and have the confidence to take on whatever life may throw at you.
How to Choose the Best Sunscreen for You
With so many sunscreen options to choose from, we know it can be overwhelming trying to find the right one for your lifestyle. The first step: When you’re in the sunscreen aisle at the store, grab one that is SPF 30 or higher and offers broad-spectrum protection (this means that you’ll be protected from UVA and UVB rays.) If you’re planning on being out in the water, select one that is also water resistant so that you can enjoy your relaxation time without the stress of constantly reapplying.
If possible, stay in the shade when the sun is the strongest (usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.) Unfortunately, this is not always going to happen for men who work outside or are very active outdoors. If seeking shade is not an option, add further protection by covering your head with a hat and wearing sunglasses with UV protection. Allow your sunscreen to absorb into your skin for at least 30 minutes before participating in your outside activities for the best protection. Reapply your sunscreen every two hours, especially if sweating or swimming. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to areas like your lips and ears – these places can be easy to forget but the sunburns are painful. Lastly, keep the UV index in mind; a UV index of 8+ is considered very high and extra precaution is needed during this time.
Skin is the body’s largest organ, it’s incredibly important to show it some love and take care of it all-year round, but especially during the hottest time of the year. While this time of year is filled with spending time with your friends and family outdoors and it’s easy to get caught up in the fun, remember to take care of your skin. Skin is irreplaceable – we only get the one we have, so let’s take care of it and our lives.
